Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO): Flights, Visas and Getting to the Mountain

Kilimanjaro airport, officially Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), is the main gateway for Mount Kilimanjaro climbing tours. This guide covers where JRO sits, how far it is from Moshi and Arusha, which airlines serve it, what to expect at arrivals, the visa and yellow fever rules, and which climbs include the airport transfer. It also looks at the alternatives, from Arusha Airport to flying via Nairobi and crossing at Namanga. The bookable trips are compared on all Kilimanjaro climbing tours.

Quick answer JRO at a glance

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) sits in Hai District, about 40 km from Moshi and about 60 km east of Arusha, per Wikipedia. Many Kilimanjaro climbers fly into JRO, clear immigration, and meet their operator's driver in the arrivals zone. The Tanzanian embassy lists the single-entry visa at $50 (US$50) and the multiple-entry visa at $100 (US$100). Altezza Travel says US passport holders pay $100 (US$100) at JRO, while the UK FCDO says a multiple-entry visa cannot be obtained on arrival.

Key takeaways

  • Scheduled airlines at JRO include KLM, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Air France, Brussels Airlines, flydubai and Edelweiss (seasonal), per Wikipedia. See who flies there.
  • Several climbs include the JRO pickup, among them the Lemosho Route 7 Days and the Rongai Route 7 Days.
  • For hotels, ATMs and what the town offers, read the guide to Moshi Tanzania.
  • Compare routes, durations and what each price includes in the comparison table of Kilimanjaro tours.

Where JRO Is and How Far Things Are

Kilimanjaro International Airport sits between the two towns that base most climbs, on the Moshi-Arusha Highway in Hai District of the Kilimanjaro Region.

Distances from JRO

Wikipedia places JRO about 40 km from Moshi along the Moshi-Arusha Highway and about 60 km east of Arusha, roughly halfway between the two towns. Follow Alice instead describes JRO as just outside Arusha, which understates the distance on the map. The figures below follow Wikipedia. The airport sits at 894 m (2,932 ft) with a 3,600 m asphalt runway, and it opened on 2 December 1971. In 2024 it handled 1,044,276 passengers, making it the third busiest airport in Tanzania.

Moshi and Arusha are both real climbing bases. Moshi had 221,733 residents in the 2022 census and lies on the lower slopes of the mountain. Arusha sits at 1,400 m (4,600 ft) with 617,631 residents. Where you stay is set by your operator's package more than by the airport.

Getting from the Airport to Town

Drive times are operator-stated only and vary with traffic, so treat them as rough. Operators quote about 45 to 50 minutes from Moshi to Machame Gate, and Footslopes Tours puts Moshi at about one hour from Marangu, Machame, Umbwe and Mweka gates and 3 to 4 hours from Londorossi and Rongai gates. There is no published public bus timetable from the terminal in the sources used here, so plan on a prearranged transfer or a taxi.

The practical details of the town itself, from hotels to ATMs, are in the Moshi Tanzania guide.

Who Flies There

JRO has direct links from Europe, the Gulf, East Africa and domestic Tanzania, plus seasonal leisure routes.

Scheduled Airlines at JRO

Wikipedia's airline list names KLM from Amsterdam, Qatar Airways from Doha, Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa, Kenya Airways from Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, Air France from Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brussels Airlines from Brussels, flydubai from Dubai, Uganda Airlines from Entebbe and Edelweiss from Zurich as a seasonal service. Domestic and regional services include Precision Air from Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Nairobi, Flightlink from Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Zanzibar, Airlink from Nairobi and Zanzibar, and Air Tanzania from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Neos flies seasonally from Milan Malpensa.

Two cautions. Route aggregators checked did not confirm nonstop Istanbul or Zurich flights to JRO, so verify those two on the airline timetable before you book around them. Wikipedia also lists British Airways from London Gatwick to JRO seasonally from 27 May and Air Tanzania from Gatwick from July. These are announced services, not ones operating yet.

Getting There from the USA and Elsewhere

Follow Alice says travellers from outside East Africa usually reach JRO via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam. That matches the airline list above: Kenya Airways, Airlink and Precision Air all connect Nairobi, and Ethiopian, Qatar, KLM and flydubai feed JRO from their hubs. A US itinerary therefore needs at least one connection, for example in Amsterdam, Doha, Addis Ababa or Nairobi.

From Nairobi there is also a land option, covered below.

The Alternatives: Arusha Airport, Nairobi and Namanga

Arusha Airport (ARK) sits in the Olasiti ward of Arusha city at 1,390 m (4,550 ft) with a 1,860 m runway. It opened in 1953 and handled 404,626 passengers in 2024, far fewer than JRO. It is a regional field: Coastal Aviation and Regional Air list Kilimanjaro services, Coastal also flies to the Serengeti, Manyara and Tarangire, and scheduled flights to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar run with Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Tropical Air and As Salaam Air, with ZanAir adding Mombasa. No scheduled jet service from Europe is listed, so intercontinental arrivals land at JRO.

If fares via Nairobi are cheaper, you can fly to Nairobi and cross at Namanga, a town split by the Kenya-Tanzania border. Wikipedia puts Namanga about 110 km from Arusha, and Mount Kilimanjaro is visible from the town. Rome2Rio lists a Riverside shuttle from Nairobi to Moshi averaging 7 hours 45 minutes, running once daily at an estimated $23 (US$23) to $50 (US$50). One traveller's account reports three hours to Namanga and a further 1.5 hours to clear into Tanzania. Rome2Rio gives Nairobi to Moshi as 276 km in a straight line and 319.9 km by road. Factor the border time in against a same-day connecting flight at JRO. Follow Alice says overseas travellers usually fly via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam.

Arriving: Visa, Health and the Transfer

Arrivals at JRO involve the visa, possibly a yellow fever certificate, the mandatory inbound insurance, and the meeting your operator has arranged.

Visa on Arrival and the E-visa

The Tanzanian embassy lists the ordinary single-entry visa at $50 (US$50), the multiple-entry visa at $100 (US$100), transit visas at $30 (US$30) and business visas at $250 (US$250). Applications go through the online e-visa system and fees are paid by Visa, Mastercard or bank transfer. Follow Alice adds that a standard tourist visa is valid up to 90 days and that US citizens must buy a $100 (US$100) multiple-entry visa valid for a year. Altezza Travel confirms the visa is obtainable at JRO for $50 (US$50) for most nationals and $100 (US$100) for US passport holders. About 50 countries need no visa at all, per Follow Alice, including South Africa, Kenya, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, India, Brazil and Turkey.

The UK FCDO says single-entry tourist and business visas can be bought at main ports of entry, but a multiple-entry visa cannot be obtained on arrival. Ascend Tanzania calls the e-visa the preferred option for most Kilimanjaro climbers because it cuts airport queues, and notes approval is final only once an immigration officer confirms it. Two different portals are named by operators, eservices.immigration.go.tz and visa.immigration.go.tz, so confirm the correct address on the immigration department's own site rather than trusting either link here. Your passport must expire at least six months after arrival and have at least one blank page, per the UK FCDO.

Two more arrival rules from the FCDO matter. Non-resident visitors to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar must buy Tanzanian government inbound travel insurance even with a personal policy, valid up to 92 days, and may be refused entry without it. And SafariFind advises carrying US dollar notes printed in 2009 or later as a backup, because older bills are often refused. Visa fees are excluded from the price in the Altezza, Zara Tours and Habari listings.

Yellow Fever and Health at the Border

The yellow fever rule is conditional. The UK FCDO says a certificate is needed only when arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk. The US CDC agrees that proof is required for travellers aged 1 year and over arriving from countries with transmission risk, including layovers or transits longer than 12 hours in such a country. It also says vaccination is generally not recommended for travel to Tanzania and proof is not required for direct travel from the US. If your routing transits a risk-listed country for more than 12 hours, carry the certificate.

The US CDC adds that malaria is transmitted in all areas of Tanzania below 1,800 m (5,900 ft), which includes both Moshi and Arusha, and recommends hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines for most travellers. Altitude on the mountain is a separate subject covered in the altitude and acclimatisation sections of Kilimanjaro climbing tours.

The Airport Transfer and Which Climbs Include It

Several packages with hotel nights include the JRO pickup. Altezza Travel meets guests in the arrivals zone at JRO and transfers them to a hotel in the foothills. Habari Adventure picks guests up at JRO and transfers them to a hotel in Moshi with a guide briefing and equipment check. Nafika Tours transfers guests from JRO to a Moshi hotel and collects them for Lemosho Gate at about 8:00 am. Zara Tours includes two nights at Springlands Hotel in Moshi before and after the climb plus airport transfers, and Altezza includes two nights at the Aishi Machame Hotel with an 11:00 AM check-out.

Three examples with the pickup priced in: the Lemosho Route 7 Days costs $3,959 per person and starts with JRO pickup then the Aishi Machame Hotel. The Lemosho Route 8 Days costs $3,200 per person with the same JRO pickup and a Moshi hotel. The Marangu Route 5 Days costs $2,402.60 per person from Springlands Hotel with transfers to and from JRO. Read each card carefully, because not every climb includes the transfer. The Rongai Route 7 Days Budget at $2,000 per person starts with a Moshi pickup and lists airport transfers and Moshi hotel nights as not included, so you would arrange your own JRO leg. Altezza Travel puts hotel lunches and dinners at about $15 (US$15) per person, a cost that sits outside the climb price.

JRO Arrival Tips

Practical dos and don'ts for the arrival day, all drawn from the sources above.

Do

  • Do apply for the e-visa before you fly because it cuts airport queues at JRO, per Ascend Tanzania, and approval is final only once an officer confirms it.
  • Do check your passport expires at least six months after arrival and has at least one blank page, because the UK FCDO states both as entry requirements.
  • Do carry US dollar notes printed in 2009 or later because older bills are often refused, per SafariFind.
  • Do confirm whether your package includes the JRO pickup before booking, because listings such as the budget Rongai climb exclude airport transfers and Moshi hotel nights.
  • Do buy the Tanzanian government inbound travel insurance before travel, because the UK FCDO says non-resident visitors may be refused entry without it even with a personal policy.

Don't

  • Don't plan on a multiple-entry visa at the airport, because the UK FCDO says multiple-entry visas cannot be obtained on arrival and Follow Alice says US citizens must buy the $100 (US$100) one.
  • Don't assume you need a yellow fever certificate for a direct flight, because the US CDC says proof is only required when arriving from a transmission-risk country or after a layover there longer than 12 hours.
  • Don't book around the Istanbul or Zurich routes without checking the airline timetable, because aggregators checked did not confirm those nonstops to JRO.
  • Don't treat the announced Gatwick services as bookable today, because Wikipedia lists them as future routes rather than operating ones.

Kilimanjaro Airport FAQ

Which airlines fly to Kilimanjaro airport?

Wikipedia lists KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Air France, Brussels Airlines, flydubai, Uganda Airlines and seasonal Edelweiss and Neos at JRO, plus regional services by Precision Air, Flightlink, Airlink and Air Tanzania. If you are choosing between arrivals, see how JRO fits into the routes on the Kilimanjaro climbing tours comparison.

How far is Kilimanjaro airport from Moshi and Arusha?

Wikipedia puts JRO about 40 km from Moshi and about 60 km east of Arusha on the Moshi-Arusha Highway, though Follow Alice describes it as just outside Arusha. The distances decide which base suits you, so compare the two towns in the Moshi Tanzania guide.

How do I get to Kilimanjaro airport from the USA?

Follow Alice says travellers from outside East Africa usually connect through Nairobi or Dar es Salaam, and US flyers also reach JRO via the European and Gulf hubs of KLM, Qatar Airways, Air France, Brussels Airlines and flydubai. Once you land, several climbs start with the JRO pickup, such as the Lemosho Route 7 Days.

Can I get a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro airport?

Yes, single-entry tourist visas can be bought at main ports of entry per the UK FCDO, and Altezza Travel states the fee is $50 (US$50) for most nationals and $100 (US$100) for US passport holders, though the UK FCDO says a multiple-entry visa cannot be obtained on arrival. The embassy lists applications through the e-visa system. Visa costs sit outside climb prices, which is why the what's-included detail on cards such as the Machame Route 6 Days matters.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate at JRO?

Only if you arrive from a country listed as a transmission risk, per the UK FCDO, including a transit or layover there longer than 12 hours per the US CDC. Direct travellers from the US need no proof. Health rules sit alongside the altitude planning covered in how long does it take to climb Kilimanjaro.

Is it safe to travel to Kilimanjaro now?

The UK FCDO advises trekkers to use a reputable company, keep to established routes and always walk in groups, warns of road accident risk in Tanzania, and notes protests after the 2025 general election with advice to stay away from crowds. Apply the same caution at the airport and in transit as on the mountain, and read the route-by-route comparison table before choosing an operator.

Land at JRO and the Lemosho Route 7 Days starts with an airport pickup, park fees and two hotel nights already in the $3,959 per person price.
